Executing the Plan to the ‘t’

Saturday May 30, 2009

Why do so many plans fail to produce the results? This question has always fascinated all the strategic planners and management thinkers. Let us look at some of the issues which typically crop up and hit the well laid plans.

One, the plans have not taken the reality on the ground into account
Two, the plans are being executed by people who are not skilled

There cannot be any other issue. Every single issue is a combination of the two above. Let us take an example. If the plan has taken into account all factors but let us say on the date of execution the reality is slightly different, it again means that the plan has not factored the possible change in reality.

Another example. Let us say that the team does not believe in the plan though greatly skilled. Even if that is the case, the lack of belief would mean that in some respect, they were not skilled to execute the plan.

There are no quick fixes. The only way to ensure execution to the t is to ensure skilled people. That is where continous training comes in. The only way is to ensure that the plan takes into account the possiblity of changing realities. Both are very very difficult to achieve. That is why so many well meant, well laid plans go awry.
