Next G20 Summit to be held in US

The next G20 summit will happen in the US. The white house confirmed it yesterday. The G20 summit is the meeting of world leaders and will happen in the month of september. The meeting is scheduled to happen in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on Thursday 24 September and Friday 25 September.

The previous G20 summit happened in April. During that time, the center was London. That summit came up with a $1.1tn (£691bn) rescue plan in order to revive the world economy.

The September meeting is expected to monitor the implementation of the plan so far, and decide whether further measures are needed.

‘Magna’ficent Offer for GM?

There are indications from Berlin that the canadian car parts maker Magna International might be buying out GM operations of Europe. The Late-night talks are still continuing in Berlin as US and German officials seek a takeover of Opel and Vauxhall, parts of General Motors’ European division.

Reuters quotes that the talks between Magna and GM are proceeding well. Earlier, Magna briefed UK Business Secretary Lord Mandelson, who said a deal was “pretty close”.

The US parent firm is expected to file for protective bankruptcy on Monday. General Motors, one of the world’s largest carmakers, has been stricken by a collapse in demand for new cars amid the global recession.

Oil Hits $66

Oil prices hit $66 and went above that, a six-month high. This is basically because of the falling US reserve stocks and some signals on the economic shirinkage of the US slowing down.

US light crude for July delivery climbed $1.16 to $66.24 a barrel, and fell and to settle at $65.77. Meanwhile, the Commerce Department report on first quarter GDP showed a 5.7% contraction - revised down from an initial 6.1% fall, which means that the shrinkage of the economy is slowing down. In other words, some signs of recovery being there.

On the supply side, the Energy Information Administration said US oil supplies had dropped for the third week in a row.

Also on Thursday, Opec oil ministers decided to keep output unchanged, amid optimism that prices are set to rise. The Saudi oil minister predicted prices will reach $75 this year.

Time Warner and AOL to part ways

At a time when most companies are scouting partners to shore up each other, Time Warner is spinning off the AOL internet division as a separate company. Time Warner says its board has approved plans to spin off its AOL internet division as a separate company by the end of this year. Time Warner will buy the 5% of AOL it does not already own from Google, then offer the firm to its own shareholders.

AOL and Time Warner combined in 2001 in what has become one of the least successful mergers in history.
